Introduction
How much do you know about Pitra Paksha? Is what you know enough or are there some more things left to know? What is the meaning of Pitra Paksha? Just like birth and death are a mystery, Pitra is also a mystery.
In our Vedas, scriptures, Upanishads and Puranas etc., sages and saints have explained in detail about the deep secrets of life and death. It is said in Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta that any living being that is born is sure to die and this is the law of nature. But it is also said in Geeta that the body gets destroyed but the soul remains immortal and takes birth again and again. That is why there are rules and beliefs of performing rituals and Shraddha etc. on the basis of rebirth.
But most people wonder whether the things given in the name of ancestors actually reach them or not. How do the things, food etc. given by us reach them? Do ancestors get satisfied by feeding Brahmins and Pandits? And many more such questions come to people’s minds. It will not be possible to give an exact answer to all these questions because it is difficult to apply certain parameters to all things in the universe.
There are many things about which it is not possible to be careless. And despite having proof of some things, it becomes difficult to believe them, but some things have to be believed despite not having proof. Along with Vedas, Puranas, religious beliefs, the rituals performed during Pitra Paksha are also related to scientific beliefs. We should know about them.
This time Pitra Paksha has started from 17th September and it will continue till 2nd October. In Pitra Paksha, people do Sharad, Pinddaan, Brahmin Bhojan etc. as per religious beliefs to please their ancestors, to get salvation, peace, debt relief and blessings. Some people do this ritual at their home or near any river, lake or pond near the house, they are doing rituals like Tarpan, Pinddaan, Shraddha and Brahmin Bhojan etc. But before doing all this, it is important for us to know who are the ancestors. And when and how did they come into existence.
Introduction to Ancestors
It is a common belief among people that those who die become ancestors. According to Garun Puran, after death, souls are taken to Yamalok and according to the deeds of those ghost souls, they get ghost or other births. Souls who reach Devlok by doing virtuous deeds get Pitralok.
According to the Puranas, ancestors are divided into two parts, one of which is Divya Pitras and the other is Manushya Pitras. The chief of the Divya Pitras is Yamraj, who also resides within. In such a situation, Yamraj, Aryama, Som and Kavyavadanal are the main heads of the group of 4 Divya Pitras. The group of Divya Pitras includes 9 Divya Pitras like Agniswatta, Barhishad, Ajyap, Somep, Rashmip, Updoot, Ayantun, Shraddhbhuk and Nandimukh.
Why is it necessary to perform Shradh and what if it is not done?
It is said that after death, the ancestors who are dissatisfied come to earth to see how our family, our children or our lineage are. The second reason is that they see that if we come, we will get food and water, the third reason is that they also see that after our death, the rituals are not being performed properly.
The body may be hungry but the soul feels dissatisfied. It is said in the Gita that the body is satisfied with food but by offering food to the fire, the soul gets it and the mind is also satisfied. By doing Pind Daan and Sharad, even the subtle creatures and birds get food.
If Pind Daan is not done, the soul remains dissatisfied.
Does Pitra Dosha really exist or is it just a superstition?
Pitrudosha has been mentioned in our Dharma Shastra and Puranas, therefore it cannot be called a superstition. There is clear evidence of this that people from foreign countries and developed countries like America also come to India and come to Gaya in Bihar for Pinddaan, liberation from Pitrudosha and salvation of their ancestors.
What will happen if Shradh is not performed?
Why is it necessary to perform Shraad? It is important to know that if we do not perform Shraad, then what harm can happen. According to our Hindu religious beliefs, we are told to perform Shraad every year. But some people oppose it, but it is important for us to know about the harm caused by not performing Sharadvidhi.
