According to Durga Puran, some of the 51 Shakti peeths are also established abroad, such as 42 in India, 4 in Bangladesh, 1 in Sri Lanka, 1 in Pakistan, 1 in Tibet and 2 in Nepal.
The mythological story of Maa Durga becoming Sati and becoming a Shakti Peeth
This mythological story is related to the mother becoming a Sati and becoming a Shakti Peeth. Maa Durga was born as Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, who was married to Kailashpati Shiva. Hence Shiva became the son-in-law of King Daksha. Once the sages and saints organized a Yagya in which all the gods and goddesses and Prajapati Daksha were also invited. All of them were present in that Yagya.
When Prajapati Daksha reached there, all the gods stood up to welcome him but Shiva did not stand up. Lord Shiva was the son-in-law of Daksha. Seeing this, King Daksha became very angry and to take revenge for this insult, King Daksha also organized such a Yagya in which he invited all the gods but did not invite Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva and Sati Mata did not attend this Yagya. But when Mata Sati came to know from Narad ji that a Yagya has been organized at her father’s house, but she and her husband were not invited, she became very angry on hearing this. Then Narad ji explained to her that no invitation is required to go to father’s house. On hearing this, Devi started going there.
Then Lord Shankar tried to stop her and explained that it is not right to go without invitation. But even after Lord Shankar explained, Sati did not agree and went to the Yagya but refused to come to Lord Shankar. Mata Sati reached her father King Daksha and asked him why he did not invite her husband and opposed him and asked the reason. King Daksha said very insulting things about Lord Shankar in front of Sati. Mata Sati could not tolerate this insult and jumped into the Yagya Kund and sacrificed her life.
When Lord Shiva came to know about this, his third eye opened in anger and a situation of destruction arose in the whole Brahmin. Lord Shiva took Sati’s dead body on his shoulder and started roaming in the whole Brahmin. On his order, Veerbhadra beheaded Prajapati Daksha and those who heard Shiva’s slander also got their punishment. Seeing this separation, Mother Sati appeared before him and said that wherever the parts of my body will fall, Shaktipeeths will be built there. But Shiva started roaming in the whole Brahmin with Sati’s dead body and also started doing Tandava, due to which a situation of destruction started arising in the universe due to his separation.
Seeing the three worlds in danger, Lord Vishnu cut the body parts of Mata Sati into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. Whenever Lord Shiva would put his feet in a dance pose, Lord Vishnu would cut off one of the body parts of Mata Sati with his Sudarshan Chakra and the pieces would fall on the earth. According to Shashto, wherever the body parts of Mata Sati fell, a Shakti Peeth emerged there and a total of 51 Shakti Peeths were formed. In the next birth, Sati was born as Parvati in the house of King Himalaya and after severe penance, she got Lord Shiva as her husband.
