People from all over the world come to see these new seven wonders of the world: Philo of Byzantium, a Greek engineer, compiled a list of the seven wonders of the world in 225 BC. These were known as the ‘themata’ and were a list of the greatest buildings of classical antiquity and the finest architecture. These include the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus (Olympia, Greece), the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt. The list received praise for its uniqueness and architecture.

A new millennium project was launched in 2000, known as the New 7 Wonders. It was a global democratic exercise asking people to choose the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’. It was a worldwide initiative where people could choose the new man-made wonders of the world, which could be seen as the true successors of the ancient seven wonders! The Great Wall of China, Christ the Redeemer, Brazil; Colosseum, Italy; Petra, Jordan; Machu Picchu, Peru; Taj Mahal, India; and Chechens Itza, Mexico were selected as the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’.

With a total length of 13,170 miles and spanning 15 sections, the Great Wall of China is the longest feat of human engineering. It was built in the 3rd century BC by Emperor Qin Shi Huang to keep out invaders. Although it never effectively stopped them, today it has become a unique Chinese heritage site and a symbol of China and is visited by more than 50 million tourists each year.

    Christ the Redeemer, Brazil

The Taj Mahal has also been included in the New Seven Wonders. It took almost 20 years to build the Taj Mahal. About 22,000 labourers worked to build the Taj Mahal. Ivory-white marble and semi-precious stones have been used in it. This mausoleum is one of the most famous structures in the world and is a stunning symbol of India’s rich history which people from all over the world come to see.

    Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel nestled in the rocky countryside of Cusco, Peru. It was known only to the peasants who lived there until American archaeologist Hiram Bingham noticed it in 1911. Machu Picchu is built at the peak of the Inca Empire. The site stretches over 5 miles and includes about 150 buildings, ranging from bathhouses and homes to temples. Most of the city here was destroyed during the Spanish conquest. Machu Picchu is considered one of the best-preserved Inca cities in Peru.
