The meaning of the word Ganesh is lord of all living beings. Ganesh ji is also called Vinayak. The meaning of Vinayak is that the god who is worshiped before any auspicious work is called Vinayak. Ganesh Chaturthi is an education and religious festival.
The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India including Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa Delhi but it is especially celebrated in Maharashtra.
According to religious traditions, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in honor of the birth of lord Ganesha on this day lord Ganesh was born on this day, lord Ganesh is worshiped and big pandals are set up in which big idols of lord Ganesha’s are established.
The puja of lord Ganesha lasts for 9 days and a large number of people gather for darshan.
After 9 days the idol of lord Ganesha is immersed in the sea, river or a lake when Ganesh Utsav starts many months in advance artisans start making idols during Ganesh Utsav, we find ideals of lord Ganesha in different shapes and size their idols are very beautiful on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi people keep idols in their homes during the 10 days we see pandals decorated a many places in there pandals,

The idols of lord Ganesh is established and there is also a priest in his name who worships lord Ganesha according to the rituals. different types of sweets are offered to lord Ganesha as prasad and laddu Ganesh ji like Modak very much, especially in Maharashtra, Modak bhog is made from rice, jaggery and coconut.
Ganesh Chaturthi Katha
After Mahadev’s departure, Mata Parvati created an effigy of a child from the remains of her body and breathed life into it. Mata Parvati named the child Vinayak and Mata Parvati said to the child, you sit at the door; I will take a bath and come do not let anyone come inside.
When Shivji’s reached there after bath in the river, Vinayak stopped him at the door and told him that no one was allowed to go inside. Lord Shiva explained a lot but Vinayak did not agree. Lord Shivji become very angry and took out his Trident with which he cut off the head of the child and went inside.
When Mata Parvati came to know what happened then she become very angry and threatened to destroy the Universe. To appears the anger of mother Parvati, Shivji sent his men and told them to cut of the head of the first person they saw in the North direction. The men looked toward the North and saw a baby elephant lying there, they cut off its head and placed it on the child’s body and insurrected them Shivji gave him the name of Ganesh. God gave all the powers to Ganesh ji and also blessed him to be the first worshiper. This incident accrued on Chaturthi day in Shukla Paksha of Bhadra Mah, hence this situation is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi.
