In Hinduism, the devotees worship Goddess Durga with great devotion. She is also known as Adishakti Jagat janani Jagdamba. The nine forms of Goddess Maa Durga Bhawani are worshipped during Navratri. All these nine goddesses have different forms, weapons and different forms. These goddesses are called Paap Vinashani (destroyers of sins), but they are all one and the same. They are forms of Goddess Bhagwati and have appeared from her.
In the Durga Saptadashi Granth, the names of the nine Durgas are given in sequence
First Shailpurti, second Brahamcharini, third Chandraghanta, fourth Kushmanda, fifth Skandmata, sixth Katyaini, seventh Kaalratri, eight Mahagauri, nine Sidhidatri or Nav durga.
There are nine forms of Maa Durga :-
There are nine forms of Maa Durga which we worship during Navratri which are known as Nav Durga.
1.Shailpurti
Goddess Shailpurti is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. She is the first Durga. She is called Shailputri because she was born in the house of mountain king Himalaya. Her vehicle is Taurus. She has a trident in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand. This goddess is also known as Sati.
2.Brahamcharidi
Brahma means penance and Charini means one who practices it. This means one who practices penance, hence it is called Brahmacharini. On the second day of Navratri, Maa Brahmacharini is worshipped and devotees surrender themselves at the feet of the mother.
Maa Parvati did very difficult penance to get Lord Shankar as her husband. Due to this difficult penance, she is known as Goddess Brahmacharini. It is said that by worshipping Goddess Brahmacharini, one gets all the success by her grace. The essence of her story is that one should not let the mind get distracted even in difficult situations.
3.Chandraghanta
The goddess who is worshipped on the third day is known as Chandraghanta. On this day, the idol of this form of Maa Durga is worshipped. Devotees experience many fragrances and hear many sounds by the grace of this goddess.
The form of Goddess Chandraghanta is considered to be peaceful and auspicious, so it is said that devotees should worship this form of Durga regularly.
The body of this goddess is shining like gold and she has ten hands in which she holds a sword and all other weapons. There is a half-moon in the shape of a bell on the forehead of the goddess, so she is called Chandraghanta.
4.Kushmanda
On the fourth day of Navratri, the Kushmanda form of Maa Durga is worshipped. Maa created the egg i.e. the universe with her light smile, since then the Goddess is known as Kushmanda.
It is said that when the creation was not there and there was darkness all around, then Maa created the universe with her light smile, that is why she is also called the Adishakti of the universe. She has eight arms due to which she is also called Ashtabhuja.
In her seven arms, she has a kamandal, bow, arrow, lotus flower, a vessel full of nectar, mace and chakra. In the eighth arm, she has all the stairs and a garland giving treasures. She rides a lion. She is the only Goddess who resides within the solar system and has such power.
5.Skandmata
On the fifth day of Navratri, the Skandamata form of Maa Durga is worshipped. She is called Skandamata because she is the mother of Skanda Kumar Kartikeya. She has four arms. In one arm, Maa is holding Skanda, in the other two arms she is holding lotus flowers and in the fourth arm she is in Varada Mudra. She is the ultimate giver of happiness and the one who opens the door to salvation. This mother surely fulfills all the wishes of her devotees. She sits on a lotus seat and has a lion as her seat.
6.Katyaini
The Katyayani form of Maa Durga is worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri. On that day, the mind of the devotee is absorbed in the Agya Chakra. Agya Chakra is very important in Yoga Sadhana. By worshipping it, the devotees get all the four fruits of wealth, religion, desire and salvation. Along with this, their diseases, defects and fears are destroyed and they also get freedom from the sins of the entire life.
7.Kalratri
On the seventh day of Navratri, Maa Durga’s Kalratri form is worshipped. It is said that worshipping Maa Kalratri opens the doors to attaining all the siddhis. All the brown powers of the universe are afraid of the name of Maa Kalratri and run away on pronouncing her name.
From the name Kalratri itself it appears that she is dark in complexion, with dishevelled hair and wearing a garland of skulls around her neck. No matter how terrifying her form is, she is the goddess who protects and blesses her devotees. She has three eyes and four arms. Maa Kalratri rides a donkey.
8.Mahagauri
On the eighth day of Navratri, the Mahagauri form of Maa Durga is worshipped. As the name suggests, her form is completely fair. She is compared to a conch, flower and moon. Her clothes and ornaments are also white in colour. She has four arms, of which the upper arm of her right hand is in Abhaya Mudra and in the lower arm, Maa is holding a trident, the upper arm of the left hand is a damru and the lower arm is in Vara Mudra.
9.Sidhidatri
On the ninth and last day of Navratri, the Siddhidatri form of Maa Durga is worshipped. Siddhidatri, as the name suggests, means the Goddess who gives all Siddhis. It is believed that if a devotee worships the Goddess with complete faith and devotion, he can attain all Siddhis.
The Goddess has four hands, in which, on the left side, there is a mace in one hand and a chakra in the other hand, while on the right side, there is a conch in one hand and a lotus flower in the other hand. She has a lion there too, along with that, she also sits on a lotus flower.
