Story of birth and boon of Mata Vaishno Devi
Mata Vaishno Devi was born in Ratnagar in South India. Both the husband and wife were childless for many years. Before the birth of their daughter, Mata came in their dream and promised that whatever their daughter wants to do, both the parents will not come between her and will not stop her. In childhood, Mata’s name was Trikuta. Due to being born in the lineage of Lord Vishnu, she was also called Vaishnavi. At the age of seven, she took permission from her parents and went to the seashore to do penance. She started doing penance of Lord Vishnu in the form of Lord Ram. When Lord Ram passed by the seashore in search of Mata Sita,
he saw Vaishnavi doing penance. Goddess Vaishnavi expressed her wish after seeing Lord Ram and said that I have accepted you as my husband, but Lord Ram was completely devoted to Mata Sita. Ramji told Vaishnavi that I will meet you this time, if you recognize me then your wish will be fulfilled, if not then you will have to wait more. On the way back, Vaishnavi could not recognize Lord Rama. Then Lord Rama gave a boon to Vaishnavi that you should do penance on Trikuta mountain and propagate the religion. I will come to you in the form of Kalki in the end of the Yuga cycle in Kaliyuga and then I will marry you. Since then, Mata Vaishnavi is sitting on Trikuta mountain in invisible form along with Maa Lakshmi, Maa Saraswati, Maa Kali.
The most popular story of Bhakta Shridhar
If there is true faith and devotion in the mind, then the mother definitely appears before her devotees and also takes away their troubles. Similarly, Mata Vaishno Devi, pleased with the devotion of her supreme devotee Shridhar, saved his honour and made him realize her glory. Since then, people from all over the world come to this pilgrimage site to have the darshan of Mata Vaishno Devi and receive the blessings of the mother.
Shridhar, a great devotee of Mata Vaishno, lived in a village called Hasali, some distance from Katra. He and his wife were great devotees of Mata Rani. They used to worship and perform aarti of Maa Vaishno daily. One day, they invited unmarried girls to their house for food to observe Navratri fast and perform Kanya Pujan. Mata Vaishno was also among those girls. All the girls left after having food, but Mata Vaishno was present there. Mata Vaishno said to Shridhar, go Shridhar, organize a feast for Mata Rani, go and invite the entire village and propagate the name of Maa Vaishno. Devotee Shridhar accepted the words of that divine girl and invited all the villagers. Along with that, he also invited Bhaironnath, disciple of Guru Gorakhnath, and his other companions whom he met on the way.
On receiving the invitation for the feast, all the people of the village were surprised and started wondering which divine girl was that who was organizing such a big feast at Shridhar’s house. To see this, Bhaironnath also reached there with his companions along with all the people and started waiting for the girl. When food was being served to everyone, Bhaironnath refused to eat that food and started demanding non-vegetarian food, then the girl explained to Bhaironnath that this is the food of a Brahmin’s house and this is the feast of Mata Vaishno, in which only satvik food will be served. But even after explaining a lot, Bhaironnath did not agree and caught the girl. Mata Vaishno knew Bhaironnath’s intention, so she became invisible and left her footprints, but Bhaironnath did not give up and followed Mata Vaishno.
STORY OF TRANSFORMATION FROM VAISHNAVI TO MATA VAISHNO DEVI.
Mata Vaishno started going towards Trikuta Mountain, Bhaironnath also followed her. It is believed that at that time Hanuman ji had protected Mata from Bhairon Nath and Mata Vaishno had brought out Ganga by shooting an arrow to quench the thirst of Hanuman ji and she had also washed her hair. Since then that place is known as Ban Ganga. After that Mata Vaishno went to rest in a cave for 9 months which we know today as Ardhkumwari.
Before Ardhkuwari Gufar, there is another place where the feet of the mother are established, which is also known as Charanpaduka. This is the place where the mother stopped and looked back at Bhairavnath.
After coming out of the cave, that divine girl took the form of Mata Vaishno and warned Bhairav Nath and tried to convince him to return but he did not agree. To stop him, Hanuman ji fought with Bhairav Nath but Bhairav Nath did not listen. He started chasing Mata Vaishno and Mata took the form of Kali and cut off Bhairav Nath’s head and saved him. After cutting Bhainath’s head, he went to Bhairav valley several kilometers away from Bhawan, where Bhairo temple is established today. And the place where Mata Vaishno cut off Bhairo’s head is today famous as Bhawan and the ancient holy cave where Mata Vaishno is seated with the three goddesses Kali, Laxmi and Saraswati.
After cutting off Bhairon’s head, he realized his mistake and Bhairon Nath apologized to Mata Vaishno for his mistakes. Then Mata gave him a boon and said that whenever he comes to see me, his journey will be considered successful after seeing Bhairon Nath. This journey will not be considered complete without your darshan.
Pandit Shridhar was very upset and he started praying to Mata continuously but Mata Vaishno did not appear before him. While praying, he fainted due to hunger and thirst. Then Mata Rani appeared in his dream and told him about these holy places and blessed him with 7 sons. Along with that, she blessed him and his family to serve and propagate Mata Rani. As soon as he regained consciousness after hearing this, he became very curious and set out to visit those places on the route told by Mata. Since then, his family has been worshipping Mata.
In today’s time, we all are familiar with the glory of Mata Vaishno and every year lakhs of devotees visit Mata Rani for darshan.
And during Navratri, the decoration of Mata Rani’s temple and court is worth seeing.
